Creo Assembly Description Differences w/ Excel Power Query

Overview

This video shows how to detect and report description differences across Creo assembly components using Nitro-BOM exports and Excel Power Query. In large assemblies, description parameters can drift over time — the same part might have slightly different descriptions in different assemblies, or descriptions may have been updated in some models but not others. This workflow exports BOM data from one or more assemblies, then uses Power Query to compare description fields and flag inconsistencies. The result is a discrepancy report that highlights where descriptions don't match, making it easy to identify and correct data quality issues. The video covers setting up the Power Query comparison, filtering for mismatches, and generating a clean report of all description differences. This is a practical data quality tool for organizations that rely on consistent part descriptions for procurement, documentation, and ERP systems.

Key Steps

  1. Export BOM data from the target assemblies using Nitro-BOM
  2. Load the exported data into Excel Power Query
  3. Group or merge the data by component identifier to align descriptions
  4. Add comparison columns to flag description mismatches
  5. Filter the results to show only components with differing descriptions
  6. Review and correct the inconsistencies in Creo using Nitro-BOM's modify function

Tips

  • Run this comparison periodically to catch description drift before it causes downstream issues
  • Use the results to feed back corrections into Creo via Nitro-BOM's Modify Parameters function
  • This same Power Query approach works for comparing any text-based parameter, not just descriptions
